The Floyd Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley May 1 fight in Las Vegas is “historic” according to the hype. That was made clear at the fight’s press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday when various promoters likened it to Ali vs. Foreman or one of numerous Sugar Ray Leonard classics.

As if that weren’t enough, De La Hoya and his fellow exec at Golden Boy, Richard Schaefer told the assembled crowd (the presser was open to the public) that this kind of fight only comes along once in a generation. But it wasn’t over yet, not even close.
De La Hoya announced that
“You have the two best fighters on the planet today fighting on May 1.”
That’s where the cringing started and the crowd didn’t react as I’m sure he had hoped. No one booed or threw things but there was no particularly positive reaction either. Among the assembled media we looked at each other and just rolled our eyes.
The elephant in the room was the name that was never spoken: Manny Pacquiao. Even Floyd Mayweather must have felt obliged to make some reference to why he was fighting Mosley in Vegas rather than Pacquiao in Dallas next weekend.
Mayweather is a crusader now. He’s fighting for truth, justice and clean boxing. He gratuitously threw out the following,
I’m trying to clean up my sport”, Floyd said. “That is why we are both (he and Mosley) taking random urine and blood tests.
The stated goal of the promotion companies is to sell three million pay-per-views for this fight. That would blow away anything numbers Pacquiao has pulled in for his bouts and surely will be used in any new negotiations between the Mayweather and Manny camps. Maybe they are thinking of trading the demand for blood testing for a larger share of the gross revenue rather than the 50/50 split.

By Dave Lahr: If this fight was to have taken place 10 years ago with Shane Mlosley (46-5, 39 KO’s) a young 28-year-old and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40-0, 25 KO’s) the older 33-year-old opponent, I could see Mosley emerging as the winner of the fight. The problem is Shane is now 38, and hasn’t fought in over a year as he comes into their May 1st fight at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. I don’t particularly care how well Mosley did against the slow Antonio Margarito in his last fight. Mosley isn’t facing Margarito on May 1st, and he’s coming off of a long layoff.
That spells defeat, anyway you want to look at it. Mayweather is the best fighter in the welterweight division, period. I’m sorry, but I think Mayweather will wipe the deck with the small Manny Pacquiao when/if they ever fight. But right now, there’s no one that can touch Mayweather, least of all Mosley. I think things are going to go really badly for Mosley in this fight. He doesn’t have the movement, the hand speed or the jab to compete with Mayweather and I think he’s going to get riddled to pieces in this fight.
It’s going to be one of those sad fights in which the old fighter gets beaten to a pulp and is made to look all of their age. Mosley is still a good fighter and I think he could beat the likes of Pacquiao, and the rest of the welterweight division. But Mayweather is a lot better than Pacquiao and a lot better than Mosley and the rest of the welterweight division. This is going to be a hopeless mismatch for Mosley. I just hope he doesn’t get beaten too badly.
I don’t want the guy to be finished completely as a fighter. I want Mayweather to take it easy on Mosley when it gets really bad late in the fight. In Mayweather’s last fight against another old fighter, the 36-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez, Mayweather dominated Marquez like he was beating a schoolboy. This is kind of how I see this fight going. I think Mosley is going to be in way over his head in this fight and unable to cope with Mayweather’s superior hand speed and defensive ability.
Mosley looked really bad in his fight before his last one against Ricardo Mayorga, getting beaten to the punch through most of the fight until he stopped Mayorga in the 12th round. Although incredibly two of the judges had Mosley in the lead at the time he stopped Mayorga, a lot of other people felt that Mosley was on the verge of losing the fight to Mayorga had he not been able to stop him in the last round. I thought the judges’ scores were ridiculous. I had Mayorga easily winning the fight. Mosley just couldn’t throw enough punches and he really undermined his own case in the fight by constantly clinching after throwing shots. That kind of thing doesn’t work when you’re fighting someone that is throwing a lot of punches like Mayorga was.

No doubt, Shane Mosley is better and overall he has fought better and stronger fighters. He has fought dela Hoya twice and won the first one convincingly and the second one controversially. Shane fought Wright and Forrest twice and lost also twice to each fighter.
Mosley won against Ricardo Mayorga who incidentally stopped Vernon Forrest and fought Miguel Cotto with a very slight margin loss. Mosley’s fight against the controversial Antonio Margarito (for his hand-wraps) has made no doubt he is one of the best welterweights. His win against Fernando Vargas was one of his best. He never turned down bigger and stronger opponents.
Mayweather on the other hand may have won against prime fighters such as dela Hoya, Hatton and Marquez but all three are no longer at their peak. The fight against Zab Judah was one of Mayweather’s best. The win against Carlos Baldomir and Shamba Mitchell were also impressive.
Conclusion
My personal prediction in the Mayweather vs Mosley fight is a KO win for Mosley, stopping Mayweather between 8th-11th round. If ever this fight ends in Decision, It would be a UD for Mosley. Mosley can bring more impression to the judges because he punches more and most of them are accurate. Mayweather is fighting against the more experienced brawler. He may think that Mosley is already too old for him at this part of his career but nevertheless, it will still be an all out war. Mosley revealed that he has so far undergone two random blood tests as well as two urine tests by the US Anti Doping Agency. However, there’s no indication of how many tests Mayweather has undergone so far neither have any results been released by the USADA.
Executive director Keith Kizer of the Nevada State Athletic Commission informed us recently that he was told by Golden Boy Promotions that the results of the USADA tests would be forwarded to the Commission but as of now there’s been no word on whether the NSAC has received any test results.
